The CC Publications Team is looking for some scary stories...

What is the worst thing (professionally speaking) that has happened to you as a designer? Have you ever had a bad internship/ work experience? A client who can't make up their mind? A contract gone wrong? An embarrassing moment during an interview? A file lost by the printers the day it was supposed to be delivered?

We are collecting the bad experiences in design from students and professionals of all ages and experience levels. We will select and publish the most bone-chilling ones in the CC Newsletter, which will come out at the end of the year. We will be happy to omit any names and details of sensitive issues, we just want the experiences...

Why horror stories? Our hope is to show that bad things happen to everyone, no matter what the level of professional maturity. You should not let these bad experiences discourage you-- instead, you can learn from these ordeals and grow as a designer and as a businessperson.

Or, if you have any questions/ suggestions/ concerns about issues that scare you about life after Pratt (finding a job, etc.), send those our way too- we'll try to find some solutions!

Please note that the deadline for submissions is November 20th, so don't delay!!!

National Yun- Lin University of Science and Technology, Digital Media Center Taiwan, July 7-18 2008

Every year, the government of Taiwan selects their best design students in design for the purpose of choosing, by competition, the very best students who will be granted full scholarship to pursue their graduate study in visual communication abroad at schools in the United States, UK and Germany.

The competition consists of lectures and assignments, given by design professors from around the world, each presenting topics from his/her field of expertise. Each visiting professor assigns a project, critiques all student work and scores the results.

This year, Pratt faculty members Alisa Zamir and EnSun Lee were invited as guest speakers and judges in the field of Visual Communication.
Alisa Zamir's topic for the design assignment was to design posters to graphically convey the concept "LESS IS MORE". The students were given a 24 hour deadline to complete and present their solutions.
EunSun Lee's assignment was a series of typography exercises with only half a day to complete.

There will be a reception at Pratt Manhattan on October 10th at 6pm, where Professors Zamir and Lee will share their experience at Yun Lin University. A talk, a visual presentation and an exhibit of all posters from the competition.

On Jul 1, Professor Jeff Bellantoni becomes our Chair.

I know you will extend to him the wonderful courtesy you have given me.

My thanks to the staff of CCinform for their efforts on behalf of GradComD over the past 15 months.

Their hard work resulted in lectures, exhibits and movie nights.

Without their long hours and support, we would not have been able to mount Survey.

In both large and small ways, GradComD has been enriched by their commitment.

Finally, it has been honor to serve as your Acting Chair.

It has given me an opportunity to gain a greater appreciation of the strengths of GradComD.

My contacts with our faculty and students leave me feeling deep respect and affection.

The following is a message from Frank Lind, Dean of the School of Art and Design, announcing our new Chair, Professor Jeffrey Bellantoni. He will assume his position on July 1.

Colleagues: I am pleased to announce that Prof. Jeffrey Bellantoni has accepted my offer to serve as Chairperson of the Graduate Communications/Packaging Design Department. Prof. Bellantoni comes to Pratt from Mercy College, where he is Chair of the Division of Civic and Cultural Studies, which includes Computer Arts and Design, a program he founded in 2001. My thanks go out to the search committee, ably chaired by Tom Dolle. We all owe a debt of gratitude to Roger Guilfoyle for his spirited leadership in the difficult time since we lost Don and, of course, to Marilyn Lyons, who helps in more ways than I can count. I know you will join with me in welcoming Jeffrey Bellantoni when he assumes his new duties on July 1st.

Friday/Saturday MAY 2/3 starting at 9:30am sharp!

FACULTY will discuss the following rules in class. Rules posted on CC Inform.

Preparation
* Faculty will review Survey procedures and explain how to edit and prepare work for presentation.
* Students MUST fill out ONLY ONE sign-up sheet for Survey.
* Faculty will return sheets to the office.
* Students will be assigned one or two click panels based on information provided on the sign-up sheet.
* Panel assignments will be posted on Monday April 28th outside of 7th floor Computer Lab.
Remember mounting and labeling takes time. Plan and design display ahead of time. Arrive early to set up.
Schedules and Deadlines
* Any late sign-up sheets must be delivered to the office by Wednesday, April 23th.
* Both Friday and Saturday Survey will start promptly at 9:30 am.
* Students are asked to be available at their panels 1/2 hour before posted start times.
* Failure to participate may result in the LOWERING of your final grades. Ask your teachers.
Vertical Click Display panels
* Students MUST purchase either (2) 30"H x 40"W black mat/illustration boards for one click panel or (4) 30"H x 40"W black mat boards for two click panels.

Note: When NOT using a shelf, an additional 25''H x 40''W mat board can be attached
with Velcro to the back of the middle mat board and suspended from there.
Horizontal Click Display panels w/ tables
* Horizontal clicks will be assigned to most Packaging and VisComm II students.
(an "H" will be placed next to student name on assignment sheet.)
* Students MUST purchase three 40" H x 30'' W black mat boards for one horizontal click panel. (see display in 7th Floor Gallery)
* One assigned number = 1/2 panel. Two assigned numbers = a full panel.
Mounting of Work
* All design projects must be mounted to black Foam Core, trimmed then positioned and mounted with Velcro to black mat/illustration boards (no other color is acceptable).
1. Bring completed mat boards to Survey ready for mounting on click panel.
2. The Velcro "loop" (soft side) is already attached to large click panel.
3. When at your panel: 1) place 2''-3'' piece of Velcro "hook" (coarse side) onto Velcro "loop" already on panel. 2) remove backing and 3) firmly place completed mat board on panel.
4. Velcro and other materials needed for Survey WILL NOT be supplied by the Department.
Shelf/Table/podium
* For 3-D work, a Foam Core shelf (12'' deep x 40'' wide) will be provided by the Department upon request.
* There will be no tables made available for 3-D work. (horizontal panels have a table below)
* Full length tables (24'' deep x 94'' long) are below the horizontal panels in Rooms 709/712/713/714.
* A limited number of podiums (18''x 18'' square) will be made available for Thesis students ONLY.

The following RULES and Guidelines apply to all students participating in Survey:
• NO T-Pins or foam tape.
• NO Spray-Mount of any kind is to be used in the Department or in the building.
• NO CUTTING ON TABLES and floors!! (Especially the Gallery show cases.)
• Please, PLEASE DO NOT LITTER!!
• The Department is NOT responsible for work left unattended or work left after the take-down period.
• Students should dress appropriately for the occasion — think of it as a job interview.
• Students MUST post an ID label with student name and course title(s).

Student Survey — Friday SCHEDULE ... (NOTE: an official schedule will be posted Survey morning)
Friday Reviews will start promptly at 9:30 am. Students electing to make Thesis presentations will do so in the morning. Faculty groups will move onto Vis Comm I students at 11:30 and critique work for the allotted time. Students must be available for a one-minute "concept" overview to the faculty.
Digital Design courses will present group videos in the 7th Floor Gallery promptly at 2:00 pm.
Prerequisite students must be available for a group presentation and review beginning at 3:00 pm.
Course faculty will present the assignments and goals of the class and will cite successful examples commenting on the project goals, design and presentation. Students will stand by their work and
may be asked to join in the conversation.

It is an evening of talk and Q&A with recent winners of the SPD

REGISTRATION UPDATE

Sign-up for registration advisement will resume at 12 om Tue, Feb 19, and continue per the previous announcement. It will follow the same pattern of first-come, first-serve.

However, we adopting new procedures for future sign-ups. After this year, the sign-up process will be based on student seniority, with GPA standing determining the hierarchy. This should make the process more understandable, eliminating the sense of arbitrariness.

I'm sorry that we can't adopt this immediately. Time here isn't sufficient time is to implement this now. Best regards

Pratt Show Portfolio Review shifted to afternoon of March 7

Also, we will shift the Pratt Show Portfolio Review to the afternoon of March 7. The review begins at 1 p.m. Those who have already signed up will keep their times. The appointments are every 5 minutes starting at 1, ending by 6 p.m.

RATT SHOW
Dear GradComD Students:
I invite all students who will complete their studio classes by the end of this spring semester and all those who graduated last semester, but did not participate in last year’s Pratt Show, to submit work for inclusion in this year’s PRATT SHOW, scheduled for Mid-May. If you are currently enrolled in Thesis (DES 699a/b) or Thesis-in-Progress (DES 700) and have participated in a previous Pratt Show, you may submit your Thesis project and any new studio class work not previously exhibited.

Portfolios will be reviewed by the Faculty Selection Committee on Monday, March 17 from 1:00pm-6:00pm in room 707. Please bring professionally comped pieces. You may also bring current projects that have not yet been completed. Your projects should incorporate both concept and craft. The faculty-jury is especially interested in work done in the more advanced studio classes (i.e., Visual communications III, Packaging Workshop, Motion Design II, Interactive Design II, Typography I and II, Typographics). The best examples from other studio classes may be included. Candidates should select the best projects in their portfolios. Only work done in Pratt Graduate studio and thesis classes will be considered for inclusion in the Pratt Show.

The show is an all-Pratt Institute event held Tuesday, May 6 –Thursday, May 8 at the Manhattan Center, 311 West 34th Street, Reception for the Professions, 6-9pm, May 8. Examples of student work from each school and department will be exhibited. In every previous Pratt Show, the work of the students from the Graduate Communications/Packaging Design department has been the best. I expect that this will be true again in May, with your support and involvement.

This is as an outstanding employment opportunity you as well a major public relations event for our department and Pratt Institute. The top professionals and employment agents in the New York City and national design communities attend. In past years, many of our students received numerous requests to make follow-up appointments to present their portfolios. Many of graduated secured excellent design jobs through the contacts made at this show. For international students who are returning home right after graduation, this is a final opportunity to give something back to our department by participating with your classmates.

The faculty has brought to my attention that some students are manifesting a pattern of missing classes.
The Pratt policy is: 3 latenesses equal 1absence, 3 unexcused absences constitute an F.
This is a graduate program.
Each student has the responsibility to fulfill the course requirements.
Being prompt, being present shows a respect for fellow students and faculty.
Lateness and absence, regardless of the number, has a negative impact on grades.
